Retail Bag Design: Meaghan Hynes

1)How do you believe your design relates to the corporate Identity of your company?

My design relates to the corporate identity of Kate Spade because the typical Kate Sade bag is white on top with a color on the bottom. I also put the spades on the side of the bag because that is also something that is always on the Kate Spade retail bag. I also kept the bag pretty simple because I believed a simpler design fit the corporate identity more.

2)How does your bag portray the “holiday”?

My bag portrays a “holiday” feeling by using red and green for the color scheme. The spades on the top are meant to be like holiday lights so that also helps bring in more of a holiday feel.

3)Do you think that the company you designed for would really use your bag? Why or why not?

I believe that Kate Spade would use this bag because it follows the layout/design that their general retail bag uses. It would not take too much for them to transfer from the normal bag to the holiday themed bag.

4)What makes your bag Unique and Different?

What makes my bag unique and different is the fact that I chose to not just do a solid color background and the fact that I stayed very true to the normal retail bag. I thought that it was important to not get lost in an overcomplicated design.

5)Describe the process in which you took to create the bag? (From beginning to end)

The first thing I did was pick a company, I chose Kate Spade because I love their bags and they are a very well respected company. I did a few sketches to get my ideas down before I started designing on Illustrator. I started off my bag in a totally different place than I ended up in. The first few days I focused on a design that would have green Christmas wreaths. I struggled a lot with getting the design to work with the size of the bag. Once I gave up on that idea I went with my second design concept, which was red and green Christmas lights. I began by just making regular Christmas lights but then thought to make the lights into the iconic spades. I made many different types of brushes on Illustrator and with the advice of the class I went with the alternating direction spades. Once I finished the outside of the bag I decided to go with the red on the inside of the bag to continue with the color scheme while keeping it simple. Once I was finished the design the bag was printed and cut out. I glue the inside to the outside and then folded along the lines to assemble the bag. I glued the sides together and then was ready to take the pictures. Once I took the photos I edited them in Photoshop to remove any blemishes.
